Reducing our carbon footprint
At Oetinger, we are aware that Scope 3 emissions currently account for the largest share of our products' overall emissions footprint.
Since 2019, Oetinger has started to carefully monitor its carbon footprint and its impact on the climate. We define our greenhouse gas emissions in CO2 equivalents and divide them into Scope 1, 2 and 3 as defined in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. with Scope 1 and 2 verified annually through our ISO 50001 energy management audits.
With a CO2 emission intensity of around 0.3 t CO2 per tonne of aluminium (Scope 1+2), our products are already up to 40 times less emission intensive than aluminium produced from raw materials. However, we believe that this is not enough. At Oetinger, we have committed to reducing the emissions intensity of our production by 60% by 2035 compared to 2020 levels and to achieve carbon neutrality at all our sites by 2040.
In 2021, we have already reduced Scope 2 emissions by purchasing electricity from renewable sources and are now focusing on Scope 1. We are currently negotiating with our energy suppliers on ways to reduce the emissions intensity of the natural gas we use, and our engineers are working on innovative technologies that can use renewable energy sources such as renewable electricity, green hydrogen or biomethane.
At Oetinger, we are aware that Scope 3 emissions currently account for the largest share of our products’ overall carbon footprint. Therefore, we look for suppliers with a low or reduced carbon footprint of their material to further pursue the vision of climate-neutral aluminium products across the entire value chain.
